The Armstrong live steam humidifier has a very high specification and is offered at an extremely competitive price.
It is ideal for situations where there is a ready supply of steam, such as hospitals and laboratories, as it removes the expense of generating steam to humidify using electrode or resistive boiler type humidifiers.
Unlike a steam-to-steam humidifier, a live steam system will give a very fast response to humidification requirements and has minimal maintenance requirements. It also has the advantages of guaranteed dry steam injection and no bacteria risk as the steam itself is totally sterile.

4 bar pressure for drier steam
The Armstrong live steam humidifier is capable of running at pressures up to 4 bar producing hotter, drier steam than other 2 bar systems. This high pressure also gives the Armstrong live steam a huge output capacity of up to 1,823kg/h from a single unit, which is two to three times that of competitive units.
By running at a higher pressure than other systems, the size of pipework and pressure reducing valve required to install the humidifier is much smaller making it a cheaper system to set-up.

How it works
The steam is initially put through a Y-strainer to remove most of the stream's dirt and scale particles.
It is then fed through a jacket that surrounds the steam lance situated in the duct. In so doing the lance's temperature is maintained at a very high level to ensure the steam passing through it and into the duct at a later, more critical stage, doesn't produce condensation on its surface.
Once the steam has traveled through the lance's jacket, it is fed into the separator. This chamber contains two baffles, which reduce the speed of the steam and reverse its flow in order to separate the condensation from the steam.

Features
The humidifier's control valve is situated in the separator chamber and is controlled by an actuator mounted on the top of the unit. By situating the valve within the separator its temperature is kept at a very high level and condensation through the control valve is eliminated.
Condensation is removed through a condensate trap located under the separator chamber. A temperature switch is located before this trap, which will only allow the humidifier's control valve to open once it reaches a set temperature. This ensures that the humidifier will only start to inject steam into a duct once the system is fully heated with super-dry steam.
Other live steam systems that don't incorporate a temperature switch as standard often recommend that the control valve is not opened until 10 minutes after the humidifier is switched on. This is often ignored in plantrooms, which leads to condensation being injected into a duct.

Once the steam has passed through the separator and is allowed to travel through the control valve, it enters a drying chamber. As the steam enters this section it is released to atmospheric pressure, thus increasing its temperature and drying it further. This drying chamber contains a stainless steel mesh that almost completely absorbs the noise of the steam's escape to atmospheric pressure and makes the Armstrong live steam humidifier quieter than other 2 bar systems.
Finally, the steam then enters the lance, which is superheated by its surrounding jacket to avoid any temperature loss and therefore condensate, before passing into the duct via holes in the lance.
